Goals from C & I 200 Field Experience

Goals from C & I 200 going to C & I 300

This semester I have a few goals in mind to hopefully help myself find a teaching style that I can relate to.  I believe that by starting off my field experience with the right goals in mind, I will be able to transition in to my next observations more smoothly as well as to set a precedent for me to continue to build on.

Goal #1 - Observe Classroom management strategies used, and see what works and does not work.

I want to be able to see how my cooperating teachers use their management skills to keep their class on task.  I would like to relate many of the techniques that are used in their classes to those that we are learning in our classes at the university.  I think that I will be able to get many examples in my observations from the extensive field experience that I will be involved in.

Goal #2 - Try to develop an idea for the layout of the class

I would like to get familiar with how teachers in the schools I will be visiting lay out their classes.  I am hoping to see what things become a distraction, and what things make it more difficult for students to move around.  On the other hand, I am looking for things that help the students obtain more from a learning environment.  Does the flow of the room allow for all students to easily move throughout the room to get anything that they needed?  Is there a place that allows for some students to get away when they need to?  Are there work areas accommodating, or do they take away from the tasks that they are to be working on?

Goal #3 - Develop ideas for cross curriculum

I want to see how my cooperating teachers use their curriculum to teach other subject areas.  I would like to develop ideas for teaching one subject, and having it relate to different areas.  For example, if there is a science lesson being taught I would like to see if they try to teach writing along with it.

Action Plan:
To meet my goals I plan on communicating with a wide variety of educators to find out what works for them when it comes to class management skills, and cross curricular strategies.  I plan on seeking answers in the beginning part of my field experiences so that I can witness these plans in action.  I also plan on visiting other classes at other age ranges so that I can see how things differ, and what tends to stay the same.  This will also allow me the opportunity to see how many classes over all design is mapped out.  I might not be able to see how the layout affects students educational needs, but I will be able to get an idea based on what I witness in my class.
